This year, for the first time, CAO is celebrating the creativity and ingenuity behind classic cocktails that emerged during the dark days of the 1920s with our “Prohibition Week” festival, in collaboration with Brown Forman. From April 5th to 27th, you’ll have the chance to enjoy three cocktails that will offer you a unique and historically rich experience.
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF PROHIBITION WEEK?
Prohibition Week traces its roots back to the historic American amendment that banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages between 1920 and 1933. During this period, famous speakeasies—clandestine bars where people went in search of entertainment and cleverly crafted cocktails—popped up. This festival pays homage to that era of creativity and rebellion, offering our guests the chance to experience the magic of classic cocktails that originated during Prohibition.
CAO JOINS THE PROHIBITION WEEK
In collaboration with Brown Forman, we’re offering three exclusive cocktails that will transport you back to the Prohibition era. Here’s a closer look at them:
Boulevardier: A Parisian Twist on an American Classic
Imagine the vibrant atmosphere of Parisian cafés during the 1920s, where creative minds gathered to bring new ideas and flavors to life. Inspired by that spirit, the Boulevardier was conceived by Harry McElhone to cater to American tastes in Paris. We present a delightful mix of Woodford Reserve, Campari, Vermouth Martini Rosso, and a touch of Angostura bitters—a tribute to the elegance and innovation of the era.
Old Fashioned: A Timeless Classic with Eternal Flavor
In the clandestine lounges of Louisville, Kentucky, the Pendennis Club was the epicenter of cocktail ingenuity during Prohibition. Here, Colonel James E. Pepper, a fervent bourbon enthusiast, inspired the creation of the Old Fashioned. With a perfect blend of Woodford Reserve, pineapple syrup, and aromatic Angostura bitters, this cocktail is a tribute to the past—a reminder of enduring flavors that withstand the test of time.
Mint Julep: A Refreshing Refuge in Dark Times
During the sweltering mornings of Virginia, the Mint Julep was more than a cocktail; it was a way of life. With roots dating back to the 19th century, this mentholated delight was the perfect elixir to refresh the spirit. Now, at CAO, we revive the essence of those days with our Mint Julep—a captivating mix of Woodford Reserve, mango shrub, and the distinctive touch of Angostura bitters.
